The pictures below show how a missing piece of veneer can be replaced. It would be carefully chosen to match the grain on the original item and stained to to the correct colour and then re-polished so that you would never know that there had been any damage at all.

As you can see from the photo on the right of the sewing box when it arrived in the workshop, it's lid was very loose and in need of a quite a bit of renovation work.
